The Sy Blue Corner: Even in defeat is a victory

RICARDO GROBAS

Our first defeat of the season, but one that was done with “cojones”. Cristiano opened the scoring after 8 minutes with Madrid on top early on before Danilo put the visitors 0-2 up against the run of play in the 23rd minute. Despite Clos Gomez’s best attempts to ruin the game with Cabral’s red card, the team showed spirit and fired back with Nolito’s thunderbolt in the 85th minute to beat the unbeatable Keylor Navas. Marcelo wrapped it up late on but this was a performance that we can be proud of.

Real Madrid dominated the first 15 minutes, but after that Celta were the team in the ascendancy even with ten men. As Nolito said, we could’ve scored four or five in the game if it wasn’t for Keylor Navas. Once again, we failed to give up despite the adversity we suffered and we can only be proud of that. Whether we are playing minnows or greats, be it Deportivo or Madrid, we impose our game plan on the opposition and take the initiative to win the game. The team were at one with the fans, signified by Aspas’ robbery gesture, and with that we can only look to the future with positivity.
Nolito, madre mía. I’ve run out of words to describe him, he’s probably the best Spanish player right now. Yes, even better than Lucas Perez. It was going to take something special to score past the Costa Rican and that is exactly what we got. A great strike into the top corner from 25 yards brought us back into the game and in the end we could’ve equalized with Guidetti’s chance. Nolito has recently stated that he can’t see himself leaving Vigo in January which is a massive boost. If he does indeed sign a new contract the only question we should be asking is whether his statue will be made of Silver or Gold.

I’m not one who usually blames the referee for decisions but Clos Gomez dealt us a bad hand from the start. In what had been a relatively mild-mannered game, the fiasco of showing four yellows and a red in the space of twenty seconds is one that I can’t seem to figure out. The incident may have looked to be getting out of hand but that was mostly down to the referee. I have watched it back a few times now and there was no aggression in the protests to begin with and without being disrespectful, his childish reaction to questions was way over the top and could’ve easily ended the spectacle. Whether it “Clost” us the game (I’ll get my coat) is unclear but when simply talking to the referee became a bookable offence I’m not quite sure.

Next week we face what could be a complicated challenge at the Anoeta but one that we can win. David Moyes’ team have performed below many people’s expectations so far this season and this could be the perfect time to play them with the pressure growing on the Scot. Nevertheless, La Real have a more than capable team and we will have to be at our best get the three points, especially without Augusto. Fontas should be fit to fill in for the suspended Cabral and hopefully we can get back to winning ways.

Best regards and come on Celta!

¡Saludos y Hala Celta!

¡Saudos e Ala Celta!
