The Sky Blue Corner: "Things looking up"

EL PROGRESO

Despite Muñiz Fernandez 2.0, wrongly disallowed goals and unjust red cards, Celta managed to win in adverse conditions against a poor Espanyol side. Iago Aspas scored a peach of a goal, looping the ball over Pau Lopez to put Celta deservedly ahead at the break before Tucu Hernandez was sent off for what I can only presume was breathing early on in the second half. Celta had the chances to increase their lead even with ten men but in the end were fully justified in picking up another three points to keep us in fourth position.

Albeit against a woeful Espanyol, the makeshift defence of Celta performed much better than in previous weeks. Wass and Mallo more than contributed to what was a solid defensive line throughout but the standout was Sergio. He has been under scrutiny for his recent performances but they have improved significantly in the last two fixtures. He didn’t have much to do in this game, but performed well when called upon, particularly an excellent stop to deny Raillo’s header. I’m yet to be convinced that Planas is good enough for a team with our aspirations but I am willing to give him time to hopefully prove me wrong.

It’s moments like this when we realise how privileged we are to have Iago Aspas back where he belongs after two long, long years away. Nine goals so far this season, only three behind his total in 2012/13, signifies how much we have improved as a team whilst he has lost none of his ability that kept us in the division three seasons ago.  Say it quietly, but with a bit of luck we could be on brink of achieving something special, so it is good to see that the club and Berizzo have reportedly opened contract negotiations.

With Nolito now expected to be out for a month, players such as Bongonda will have the chance to prove their worth and make a claim to be a force his way into the team on a permanent basis. I have been impressed with his progress so far this season and with a run of consecutive games he should improve even further. It is vital that we get some of our key players back from injury if we are to maintain the form we have shown this season but in the meantime others will have the opportunity to impress.

Next week we face 17th placed Granada in a game that we have the quality to win despite our injuries and suspensions. Jonny will likely replace Pablo Hernandez with Daniel Wass moving back into the heart of midfield. A second consecutive win will put us in a great position to make a real push for European football after Christmas and make this a memorable season for years to come.

Best regards and come on Celta!
¡Saludos y Hala Celta!

¡Saudos e Ala Celta!
