The Sky Blue Corner: Nolito sinks the Yellow Submarine

LOF

The great start to the season continues at El Madrigal. Fabian Orellana opened the scoring just before half time with Nolito grabbing a late winner to cancel out Denis Suarez’s equalizer. Eric Bailly’s second yellow definitely helped our cause, nevertheless, we thoroughly deserved the three points to take us back to joint top of the La Liga table.

These games against tough opposition demonstrate just how much we have improved this season. Ten men or not, El Madrigal is one of the toughest places to win in Spain right now and this result shouldn’t be underestimated. We dominated the second half, both in possession as well as chances created and although we probably should have wrapped up the game earlier, another win is more than welcome.

Fabian Orellana was instrumental once again in everything that was good about Celta. As well as his expertly taken goal, he caused Villarreal problems throughout by picking up pockets in between the defence and midfield, allowing space for Augusto and Wass to dictate the tempo of the game. The progression from when he was unfavoured by Luis Enrique to now is frightening and a testament to his hard work.

Not only has this win given us three points, but it has also allowed us to put a few records to rest. Last year’s run of not winning in ten games after beating Barcelona is something that may have been on the players mind if we were unable to win in the next few games. Not winning in the last sixteen games that have followed an international break before this week is also something that has been noted and the fact that we were able to break down this mental barrier should do us a service going forward.

Next week, we face the might of Real Madrid at Balaídos. Although we should not be overconfident based on the Barcelona game, I see no reason why we can’t achieve a positive result. This will be a closer game as Madrid are unlikely to play as open as Barca did but injuries could affect them. Our best performances tend to come in the big games under Berizzo and I’m hoping that this will be no different.

Best regards and come on Celta!

¡Saludos y Hala Celta!

¡Saudos e Ala Celta!
