RICARDO GROBAS |
Where do we begin? For the third successive
game, the opposing team where reduced to ten men early on when Javi Varas took
down Iago Aspas. Goals from Orellana, Daniel Wass and Nolito should have made
it a comfortable win but mistake after mistake cost us the three points to go
back to the top of the table.
On a positive note, for most of the game we
looked in control. Our attacking play was impressive with Orellana, Nolito and
Aspas linking up well throughout, especially in the first fifteen minutes of
each half. Although Iago failed to find the net he has given us something that
we severely lacked last season with Larrivey and Charles, pace in behind the
defence which was evident when he won the early penalty.
Now we move on to the elephant in the room.
To be 3-1 up at home to a newly promoted side with ten men and not win is a
real kick in the teeth. Naïve tactical decisions and poor collective defending
proved to be costly. It was blatantly obvious to see that we were struggling in
midfield from the 25th minute onwards yet instead of doing the sensible thing
and bringing on Radoja to sure up the team, another forward in John Guidetti as
if we were 1-0 down in the last minute did nothing to help the situation.
Augusto was left isolated throughout and little to no protection was given to
Cabral and Fontas. Berizzo has to take the blame for that and we can only hope
that something is done before next week’s game at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán
against much tougher opposition.
I think that in the end we have to hold our
hands up and say that Las Palmas thoroughly warranted their point. Paco Herrera
came with a plan to exploit our defensive weaknesses which was executed to
perfection. They showed “cojones” right up until the end and we got exactly
what we deserved.
Despite the obvious disappointment of the
result, seven points out of nine is not something that should be taken lightly
despite the quality of opposition we have faced so far. No matter how difficult
it is at times like these, it’s important to look on the bright side and take
the positives from what has been overall a decent start to the season. Sevilla
and Barcelona will prove to be much more challenging games which should so us exactly
how far we have come and by how much we have to improve. Thankfully we still
have 35 games in which we can iron out some of our issues and I am sure that
come May we will look back on this season as a positive one.
¡Saludos y Hala Celta!
