What better way to celebrate the clubs 92nd
birthday than to be flying high at the top of the table. Goals from Fabian
Orellana (41) and Iago Aspas (77) via the leg of ex Celta man Inigo Lopez
ensured a solid start to the new La Liga season for Los Celestes. Levante made
it a little more difficult than we would have liked despite Simao’s early
dismissal but the three points is what matters most.
It was clear to see that the overall team
performance was not the most fluid we have seen but there is no need for any
premature concern. It is important to remember that Europe is a dream, not an
expectancy. There will be ups and downs throughout the season but the fact that
we won while not playing at our best is a good sign, the performances will
improve as the players become match fit and adapt to each other’s styles of
play.
Our one shining light at the Ciudad de
Valencia was without doubt Fabian Orellana. His pace and trickery caused the
Levante back line countless problems throughout the game and Toño Garcia will
be happy to see the back of the Chilean winger. He took his goal well after
good play down the left by Jonny and helped provide the assist for Iago Aspas’s
winner. He has a habit of starting the season in goal scoring form but it is
important now that he maintains this for the rest of the season.
Ruben definitely had a night to forget. He
lacked command of his area throughout the game and was lucky to win a free kick
after Deyverson’s incorrectly disallowed goal. He now looks to be out for the
foreseeable future after colliding with Cabral’s elbow and he will look back on
this game as a missed opportunity to be the number one goalkeeper. Nolito also
failed to assert himself onto the game but I don’t think that is due to the ongoing
transfer speculation. He is a professional and I think that you have to give
credit to Ivan Lopez who handled him excellently all night. The Cadiz born
player looks a little low on sharpness but that is only natural considering he
joined preseason training late due to an injury.
I must also say that the criticism of Pablo
Hernandez is not always warranted. He lacked creativity at times during the
match but no more than 4 or 5 others. I worry that the limitations of the team
are being pinned on him individually and that won’t help anyone. He has to
improve to have a long term future at Celta however picking him out for
constant criticism is not going to make him a better player. We have two
winnable games coming up at home against Rayo Vallecano and Paco Herrera’s Las
Palmas and I see no reason why we can’t pick up maximum points to put ourselves
in the best possible position for the season ahead.
iSaludos y Hala Celta!
