After a performance as impressive as that we
can well and truly put the Rayo result further behind us than Depor are in the
table. Atletico started well in the first half with Celta struggling to break
through their pressing, but nothing could prepare them for the bombardment that
they were about to receive. Orellana’s delightful floated ball into the box
found Tucuman who rose like a salmon to head home and give Celta the lead.
Griezmann equalised soon after, taking advantage of a Ruben mistake to level
the score at the break. If the first half was a close encounter the second was
anything but John Guidetti, the boy with the golden goal, winning possession
35 yards out and smashing the ball into the top corner. The only question left
to answer is will you marry me? Tucu then grabbed a third with another headed
goal to put the result beyond any doubt. Atleti pulled one back through Correa
late one but by then their fate was sealed. Semi-finals, he we come!
Fabian Orellana was once again the shining
light in the absence of Nolito. His calmness on the ball under pressure was
very impressive while his defensive work was on point from the first minute
until the last. John Guidetti has come on a lot in 2016 and is starting to look
like the reliable goal scorer that we need him to be. Finally, but certainly
not the least, Don Pablo Hernandez. He stepped up at the crucial time to make
himself counted. He’s been arguably our best player in the last few months
alongside Fabian and is really starting to prove his worth.
After 93 years of winning absolutely
nothing except from an Intertoto cup a semi-final is a big achievement, but I
ask the question, why can’t we go all the way? With Nolito looking more likely
to stay by the day and the introduction of Díaz and Beuavue, this is our best
opportunity to win a major trophy in many a year. The prospect of reaching the
cup final excites me greatly and having progressed this far, why not?
We need to carry the momentum gathered at
the Calderón to get ourselves back on track in the league against Las Palmas on
Sunday. We must learn from the mistakes made at Rayo last week and make sure
that we are prepared for what is to come. It should be interesting to see
whether Toto Berizzo decides to rotate and rest again or stick with the same
team that won at Atletico. Three points will keep us above the chasing pack and
move us a step closer to finishing in a European spot.
Best
regards and come on Celta!
¡Saludos y Hala Celta!
¡Suados e Ala Celta!
