The Sky Blue Corner: No Guidetti, no confetti

After three straight defeats without scoring a goal it was vital that we beat Levante to stay ahead of the chasing pack for Europe. John Guidetti opened the scoring with the help of some nice play down the right from Aspas and Orellana before he finished excellently to cap off a great pass from Wass to double the lead. Iago Aspas then made it three with the game looking out of sight until two minutes of madness saw the deficit cut to just one goal. Celta managed to survive some late pressure while remaining ahead when Orellana extended the lead. Levante managed to pull another goal back towards the end highlighting our ever-present problems in defence but that should not take too much away from an otherwise excellent first 60 minute performance.

After some promising performances in the Copa Del Rey it was good to see John Guidetti playing well and scoring in the league. He looked much more comfortable in the attacking line after initially finding it difficult to adapt to the fluidity in which we play. Iago Aspas was also impressive cutting in from the right. Guidetti occupying the central defenders gave Iago more room to operate in which he used to devastating effect with a goal and two assists.

I admit that at times I have had blind faith in Sergio on the back of last season’s performances but I am now moving towards the idea of signing a new goalkeeper. At times this season he has been less reliable than the Catalan press and to advance to the next level we are going to need a more consistent first choice goalkeeper.

The recent signings of Marcelo Díaz and Beauvue will add some much needed depth and experience to our squad. Sport has recently said that Beauvue is a replacement for Nolito meaning that the exact opposite is true. He will likely operate on the right with Orellana now permanently moving to the point of the midfield which allows him much more freedom to dictate the game. The arrival of Díaz gives Berizzo a positive dilemma going forward with Radoja, Wass, Tucu, Borja and Díaz all competing for two positions in the starting eleven.

On Wednesday the Cup dream continues at Balaídos against Atletico de Madrid. After struggling to break them down in the league last week this tie will truly test our ability. Hopefully Nolito will be back to bolster our attacking capabilities and his inclusion could be the difference between the two sides.

Best regards and come on Celta!
¡Saludos y Hala Celta!

¡Saudos e Ala Celta!
